Trenton Fire Department welcomes 12 new firefighters at City Hall graduation ceremony

Twelve new members of the Trenton Fire Department were welcomed to the ranks on Monday during a graduation ceremony at City Hall.

Trenton Mayor Eric Jackson and acting Fire Director Quareeb Bashir presided over the ceremony and the new firefighters were given their assignments for ladder and engine companies in the city. The new firefighters will start work on Wednesday.
"This is something that you should cherish and remember," Bashir told a standing room only crowd in council chambers.

The newest members of the department are Angel Arce-Santiago, Khalief Bethea, Dean Gallo, Jose Gomez, Rhashawn Jenkins, Peter Mancini, Juan Martinez, Jose Sanchez, Angel E. Santiago, Jr., Kevin Soto, Akiyse Watkins and Bryan White, Jr. Their addition brings the department to a total of 224 firefighters.

The firefighters were sworn in as a new recruit class in October and underwent a dozen weeks of training at the Mercer County Fire Academy in Lawrence.

Jackson said he is sure that they will serve the people of Trenton well in the years to come.
"You take on a great task," Jackson said. "You follow great, fine men who have come before you. I take great pride that you will wear this great badge for the city of Trenton."
Their salaries are partially funded by a $14.9 million federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant, which was awarded to the city in January 2013.
